![]() But while they were often fun, I rarely found myself amazed by them as fiction. ![]() There was something about how they took the tropes of fantasy and blended them in a modern way that was like comfort food. Tin Man Games world always had a soft spot in my heart. There aren't enough good words about this book. It's entire third act is something I've never seen a gamebook do and it is a sharp way to build tension, while growing character depth. The world is internally consistent and character motivations can be seen early on if paying attention. There are so many clever ideas within that you can only see on multiple playthroughs. It is, by far, my favorite gamebook I've ever read, pushing the medium to places I didn't think it could go.Īfter mapping the whole thing out I'm just convinced this is a masterpiece. Best of all is the story, which while a bit 1980's action movie camp, is also thoughtful and really goes places. There are secrets galore, and the world building actually made my jaw drop a few times. You have friends, enemies, and alliances. The use of passcodes allows the book to remember key information about your progress so that your journey feels organic and not a jumbled bit of random events. The story begins at a cool spot and simply explodes with tons of fun options. The system abandons dice, allowing you to choose a character class or make your own. Not only was I wrong, I think this title is brilliant. Recommend by this sub, I have to admit I read the synopsis of this title and rolled my eyes.
